Ancient City of Eze, France

A short drive from Monaco, Eze nowadays is easily accessible. Historically, the town was built in a defensive way, and, to be sure, the very fact that it is built on top of a hill testifies of this defensive character. While its origins lie thousands of years ago, the village came to importance in the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, princes and artists like Prince William of Sweden and Friedrich Nietsche discover the tranquil attraction of the place on the Cote d'Azur.

The Courthouse

Women with streamlined silhouette, their style evokes the graphics of the fashion designers but also the fascinating aspects of works of the Belgian Symbolists at the end of the XIXth century.
In fact, each one has its own identity and its own personality defined by a short poem of the artist :
"Hush ! you know nothing of my thoughts behind the curtain of my eyes"
Silent promises of I know not what happiness I look at thee and that suffices"

"Feet firmly anchored on the ground,
but head in the stars..."

Jean-Philippe Richard

THE DEVIL'S VIADUCT
The edification, between 1911 and 1914, of the important viaduct, which steps over the Gaffinel ravine, at the top of its 80 meters, permitted the achievement in 1927 of the middle cornice. But in the village, it is said that the construction has been made in one night with the help of the forces of darkness.
A peasant, bored in losing each day hours walking to reach his fields on the other side of the ravine, make a deal with the devil: a bridge in exchange of the soul of the first living being who will cross it. All night long, the peasant could not sleep, tortured with the idea to sacrifice an innocent victim.

A notable? the priest blessing the bridge? The question has no answers.
In the morning, he went to the road, discovering a wonderful bridge with eight arches in huge stones….but he also discovered the devil on the other side, waiting for his due.
All of a sudden, the shepherd took a woodstick and threw it on the bridge, his dog plunged to catch it, offering by the same time his soul to the devil. Satan, annoyed of being fooled once again, turned back, swearing it would be the last time.

Starting a dialogue with the vegetable world and the horizon, the paths are scattered by the sculptures in soil of Jean-Philippe Richard.
These women, these "soil Goddesses" to the silhouette tapered, mysterious are descendant from Isis the Phoenicians venerated in these places, at the same time modest and sensual are offered at the meditation of passers by.

The brotherhood of the white penitent of Eze was founded on march 20th 1306. Initially in the church, the penitents settled in the chapel of the same name.
Located in the village center, the chapel of white penitents is a small building with a single nave preceded by a porch decorated with a calade or mosaic with pebble. The refectory and other additional rooms on the lower level are occupied today by shops.
Each brotherhood was managed by a prior and a under prior elected during the Easter holiday. In 1782, in Eze they gathered 89 men and 95 women.
Under the term of "confraternita" , the inhabitants associated the white penitent and another brotherhood created in 1713 dedicated to Saint Rosary. In the facts nothing to distinguished them : both did the same thing.
