For over twelve years now, Dr Wayne Dyer's book, You will see it when you believe it" has played a major role in my life. I have numerous memories and stories of how these ideas, presented in this book have manifested in my life. The first unexplainable event took place in 2001, the first time I heard the audio version of the book. That story is a few pages back in this blog. The latest, is what I will tell you about here..
A few weeks ago, I was returning to the United States after a few months in Europe. I had a 7 1/2 hour layover in Amsterdam. A friend, Yop, one of my swimming buddies visits Amsterdam, his childhood home occasionally. This was one of those times. He was there when I flew thru and met me at the airport. We drove into the city, to his sister's house and left the car there. From there we took the streetcar downtown. I had not been in Amsterdam since 1969 and wanted to see it again. (Yes, I am that old!) WE had our morning coffee and then took the canal cruise thru the waterways. As you can see, the entire boat was ours! The tour guide did so in English making the 2 hour or so tour extremely interesting to me. Yop had not done this tour in many-many years and I think enjoyed it as much as I did.
Floating Restaurant
City Center, Amsterdam's Union Station ~
During the cruise, Yop pointed out a floating restaurant called Jumbo, one of Dad's longtime favorites in Hong Kong. Having tried the Hong Kong version, we decided to walk there, thru city center and have lunch. We had a wonderful day and lunch when he looked at his watch and asked what time my flight was. I told him it was at 3:05 and he panicked! It was 2:00 and we were a walk, a streetcar ride to his car and then a 20 minute drive to the airport! He paid the bill and we took off. Yop kept apologizing and telling me how sorry he was. I asked him to relax and not be sorry ~ things will work out one way or the other. We walked as fast as we could to the nearest taxi stand, about 5 minutes away. We jumped in the cab and took off! Yop asked the driver something and an argument began ~ after we had driven about three blocks, he said, get out, we are leaving. Turns out that when the driver heard our plight, he turned off the meter and refused to turn it back on. So ~ off we go back to the taxi stand, Yop apologizing all the way and telling me it's impossible to make my flight. One of the things Dyer's book has given me is a peace when stressful situations arise. We made it to the stand and again headed to Yop's car across town. He assured me that is was simply not possible to make my flight and I assured him that things will happen in the manner they are meant too. Perhaps I am supposed to overnight here, perhaps the flight is late ~ Let's just proceed as if I will make my flight. It's now 2:40 and my flight leaves at 3:05 and we have a 20 minute drive to the airport.
On the way there it occurs to me that I am on a free Business class ticket. I had called the airline days before and asked if I could change the date and found out that the next "miles ticket" was November 5th. Today was the 24th of October. Oh well, it will be what it will be.
We arrived at the airport at 2:55 and I had learned that my flight WAS on time. (Thanks iPhone Aps) Yop had told me that our story was an auto accident and to stick to it ~ OK...
Yop approached the security people at the EXIT and in Dutch explained that he was the reason I was late due to an auto accident and could they let me pass? Yop told me to show them my boarding pass. Without a word of English to that point, they waved me thru and said simply, "Good Luck." I ran to gate E18 (A LONG WAY) with my carry on, which houses all my cameras and weighs about 40 pounds. At the gate, there was one man waiting there. I can see the plane and can see that it is 3:00. The gate agent was extremely relaxed, unlike me. He proceeded to ask me many questions, most of which seemed silly. Here I am out of breath and a little tense and this guy wants to know what I did in Amsterdam and asks about my kids? After about four minutes of these questions he pointed to the gate and said, "Have a nice flight."
Everybody knows about the A**hole that makes everyone else wait. Well today that was me. I entered the cabin, walked to seat 1B ~ turned to the other passengers and said, "Sorry, now if you will excuse me, I will have a mild heart attack."
I sat down, called Yop (as they announced that all electronic devices must be off at this point) and told him, I am seated and leaving, thanks for a wonderful day! The plane left on time, 1 minute after I boarded!
Now, do yourself a favor and go get this book, it CAN change your life!
